PROTEST
SUPPLY GUIDE

MANY ROLES. ONE MOVEMENT.

There’s a role for you.

Street protest is one form of participation. Time, skills, space, care and money can all support collective action.

Start with an existing group.

Ask what is needed, offer a specific contribution and agree on boundaries. These are practical applications of the linked guides, not promises of open volunteer shifts. Off-site work still has privacy, legal and interpersonal risks.

Ways to contribute

FROM HOME

Research & communications

Fact-check public claims, maintain approved resource links, draft press materials or letters, and prepare organizer-approved updates.

Boundaries & how-to resources for Research & communications

Keep participant identities and real-time movements out of public posts. Work from public information and agreed messaging.

REMOTE / OFF SITE

Accessibility & language access

Caption recordings, write alt text and plain-language versions, translate within your competence, or arrange qualified interpreters.

Boundaries & how-to resources for Accessibility & language access

Let disabled participants define access needs. Access work enables participation; it does not presume who should stay off the street.

OFF SITE / TRUSTED NETWORK

Childcare, eldercare & rides

Offer a defined care or transport shift through an established, trusted group so someone else can participate.

Boundaries & how-to resources for Childcare, eldercare & rides

Agree on consent, qualifications, access needs and emergency arrangements directly with the people involved. Do not post addresses or children’s details here.

REMOTE / OFF SITE

Legal-defense & release support

Support a currently operating local fund, offer approved fundraising or bookkeeping help, or assist with requested meals and transport after release.

Boundaries & how-to resources for Legal-defense & release support

Confirm jurisdiction, activity and what a fund covers. Bail/bond assistance and legal-defense funding are different; a directory listing is not a guarantee of protest help.

FROM HOME

Art, print & media production

Make readable signs, print requested resources, edit audio/video, or help existing groups communicate clearly.

Boundaries & how-to resources for Art, print & media production

Get consent before publishing identifiable people. Check each artist’s usage terms; Justseeds default terms restrict adaptations, commercial use and some fundraising.

Legal observing is an on-the-ground role. It requires training and local coordination; a green hat does not remove street risk. NLG separately identifies administrative, fundraising and other support work.

A 30-minute first step

  1. Choose one role and read its how-to.
  2. Find an existing local group through a trusted organization or your current network.
  3. Offer one concrete contribution: a meal shift, a captioned recording, an hour of research, or a defined donation.
  4. Agree on consent, access needs and a clear handoff. Share only necessary personal information.
PASS THE RESOURCE ALONG.
