Review evidence: EFF expert guidance; no device or accessory purchase required.

Head / Purchase candidate

Petzl BOREO climbing helmet

Rock & Snow

Item link & sharing ↗
$74.95 / helmet

A hard shell, chin strap and extended head coverage offer a practical impact-protection option. Manufacturer lists EN12492/UIAA certification.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Petzl BOREO climbing helmet

Limit: Climbing certification is not a ballistic or crowd-control-projectile rating. Try it with your goggles or full-face respirator; replace after a significant impact.

Review evidence: OutdoorGearLab comparison highlights durable hard-shell options; BOREO trails more comfortable models. Test context is climbing, not protests.

First aid / Purchase candidate

Genuine C-A-T Gen 7 tourniquet

Medical Gear Outfitters

Item link & sharing ↗
$34.99 / tourniquet

A recognizable bleeding-control tool for life-threatening limb bleeding, carried with training and emergency-service access.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Genuine C-A-T Gen 7 tourniquet

Limit: Take a hands-on Stop the Bleed course. Keep practice equipment separate from emergency equipment.

$10–25 allowance

Add compressed sterile gauze, a pressure dressing, trauma shears and a marker; keep them together with the tourniquet.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Bleeding-control support supplies

Limit: Allowance excludes hemostatic gauze, chest seals and advanced airway supplies. Add those only to match training and role.

Review evidence: No single bundle tested; obtain a contents-based quote. Chinook is a preferred ownership match.

Hands / Fit locally

Dexterous work gloves

Safety Services / local independent hardware store

Item link & sharing ↗
$8–20 allowance

For ordinary abrasion, cold and handling everyday supplies. Prioritize grip and finger movement over bulky padding.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Dexterous work gloves

Avon PC50 Enforcer Kit

Nelson Uniform

Item link & sharing ↗
$510 listed • quote required

Avon documents PC50 + CTCF50 as a non-CBRN CS/CN/P100-approved combination. This provides a clearer respiratory evidence basis than generic “gas mask” branding.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Avon PC50 Enforcer Kit

Limit: Retail page does not establish kit contents or live size availability. Confirm exact mask, filter, approved assembly, current shelf life and civilian sale. PC50 is not CBRN-approved.

Review evidence: No independent PC50-specific comparative test established. Do not transfer C50 reviews to this model.

Breathing / Quote only / not yet confirmed

Avon CTCF50 filters, four-pack

Nelson Uniform

Item link & sharing ↗
$240 upfront / 4 filters

Listed package is four filters, equivalent to $60 each. Require a sealed, in-date filter specified for the selected approved Avon assembly.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Avon CTCF50 filters, four-pack

Limit: Conservative builder includes the whole four-pack; confirm whether the PC50 kit already includes a filter, then adjust. Ask for single-filter pricing. Thread compatibility alone is insufficient.

Review evidence: No reviews on the retailer page. Follow the manufacturer’s service-life and replacement instructions.

Breathing / Get a quote

Respirator fit testing / sizing appointment

Safety Services / local occupational-health provider

Item link & sharing ↗
$0–100 planning allowance

Obtain medical clearance before reusable-mask use, then a proper fit test for your exact mask and size. Perform the prescribed seal check each time.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Respirator fit testing / sizing appointment

Limit: Medical evaluation is an additional unpriced cost. Facial hair, eyewear or helmet straps crossing the seal can defeat protection. A $0 fit-test allowance needs a confirmed no-cost service; pricing and eligibility remain unverified.

Review evidence: NIOSH guidance supports fit testing. Confirm the provider can test your exact full-face mask.

Privacy / Optional

Mission Darkness phone Faraday bag

MOS Equipment, direct

Item link & sharing ↗
$23 / bag

An optional way to isolate a phone from wireless signals while the bag is fully closed and intact. Test your own bag and device before relying on it.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Mission Darkness phone Faraday bag

Limit: Blocks calls, messages and navigation while sealed. Does not stop cameras, erase earlier location records or guarantee anonymity. Manufacturer testing includes extrapolation across product construction.

Review evidence: A 2020 gifted-product review tested a different Dry Shield sleeve. Useful context, not independent certification of this exact phone bag.

Essentials / Optional

Nitecore NB10000 Gen4 power bank

Litesmith

Item link & sharing ↗
$83.95 / bank • optional

A compact 10,000mAh USB-C charging option from a specialist outdoor retailer. Reuse a reliable bank you already own before buying.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Nitecore NB10000 Gen4 power bank

Limit: A premium weight-saving option, not necessary for most kits. Litesmith ownership remains unverified. Charge and test your cable beforehand.

Review evidence: No reviews on the listed Gen4 page. Do not assume reviews of earlier generations apply.

Eyes / Purchase candidate

Uvex Stealth S3960HS splash goggles

Safety Services • woman-owned

Item link & sharing ↗
$15.06 / pair

Manufacturer explicitly specifies chemical-splash and impact protection, indirect ventilation and ANSI Z87.1+. Replaceable anti-fog lens and adjustable neoprene strap.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Uvex Stealth S3960HS splash goggles

Limit: Chemical splash is an established use; gas/vapor tightness is not. Confirm fit and any prescription insert separately. The legacy retailer URL says S3960C; its current product heading is S3960HS—confirm the shipped SKU.

Review evidence: No merchant reviews found. Model-specific manufacturer documentation is the evidence for the protection claim.

Eyes / Purchase candidate

Pyramex Capstone goggles + face shield

Safety Glasses USA

Item link & sharing ↗
$24.09 / complete kit

GG504TSHIELD combines goggles with a removable face shield. Manufacturer lists D3 splash/D4 dust protection with vent caps installed; designed for use over prescription glasses.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Pyramex Capstone goggles + face shield

Limit: The shield has open sides and bottom. Installed vent caps do not establish gas-tightness. This is supplemental splash/impact coverage, not ballistic protection.

Review evidence: One merchant-hosted review: too little to establish field reliability. Verify exact configuration and fogging in person.

Body / Optional

LIFT Pivotal kneepads

Safety Glasses USA

Item link & sharing ↗
$35 / pair

Adjustable kneeling pads for comfort during supply preparation, kneeling and ordinary ground contact.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for LIFT Pivotal kneepads

Limit: No EN14404 or EN1621 impact certification verified. “Ballistic nylon” is a fabric description, not a ballistic rating.

Review evidence: No product reviews found. Keep the claim at kneeling comfort; do not market these as projectile armor.

Body / Optional

D3O Ghost L2 elbow/knee inserts

Union Garage • independent specialist

Item link & sharing ↗
$35 / pair of inserts

Manufacturer documents EN1621-1:2012 Level 2 Type A limb protectors, designed for compatible motorcycle-garment pockets.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for D3O Ghost L2 elbow/knee inserts

Limit: Inserts only: price excludes a garment or retention system. They must remain correctly positioned. Not standalone pads; no ballistic or stab protection established.

Review evidence: Retailer commentary supports low bulk but notes breathability compromises. That is merchant opinion, not independent projectile testing.

Body / Optional

Leatt 3DF 5.0 EVO elbow guards

Slavens Racing • independent specialist

Item link & sharing ↗
$99.99 / wearable pair

A complete pair of sleeve-style guards with straps and EN1621-1 Level 1 elbow impact protection.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Leatt 3DF 5.0 EVO elbow guards

Limit: Certified motorcycle/sport impact scope, not ballistic, stab or crowd-control-projectile protection. Check circulation, movement and pad retention.

Review evidence: No independent review of this exact current elbow model established. Do not transfer knee-guard or older-model reviews.

Body / Optional

Bowtex Elite V2 armored shirt

Union Garage • independent specialist

Item link & sharing ↗
$557 / shirt

EN17092-2:2020 AAA motorcycle garment with Level 2 shoulder and elbow protectors included.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Bowtex Elite V2 armored shirt

Limit: Chest and back protectors cost extra. Motorcycle abrasion/impact certification does not establish ballistic, stab or protest-projectile protection. Assess heat, weight, fit and mobility.

Review evidence: 1000PS has a V2 wear/comfort test. It is not a projectile test. The high garment abrasion rating is not a guaranteed safe crash speed.

Heat / Quote only / not yet confirmed

HexArmor HeatArmor 5065 welding gloves

LabSupplies • self-described woman-owned

Item link & sharing ↗
$32.99–37.99 / pair • verify quote

Specialist thermal protection: manufacturer lists ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 contact-heat Level 4 and palm resistance to 662°F (350°C), plus A7 cut resistance.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for HexArmor HeatArmor 5065 welding gloves

Limit: Not verified for safe handling of deployed canisters or flares. ANSI Level 4 is not EN407 contact-heat Level 4 (500°C). Product and collection pages show conflicting prices and availability; confirm the quote, stock and intended application.

Review evidence: Manufacturer rating supports a thermal-protection claim within test conditions; no independent canister-handling validation found.

Heat / Specialist option

Dragon Fire X2S firefighting gloves

Dragon Fire • manufacturer direct

Item link & sharing ↗
$150 / pair

Manufacturer states UL certification to NFPA1971:2018 and TPP greater than 60, with thermal and moisture layers and multiple sizes.

Limitations, reviews & evidence for Dragon Fire X2S firefighting gloves

Limit: Professional structural-firefighting scope, not a hazardous-munitions handling certification. TPP is not a safe contact-time rating. Exact 2018 standard is stated; this is not a claim of certification to the latest edition.

Review evidence: Manufacturer documentation; no independent canister or flare handling test established. Use only within training and manufacturer instructions.

EYE PROTECTION: NAME THE HAZARD

Chemical splash is a real rating. Gas-tight is a different claim.

The expanded eye selection includes the MCR 2237R, Uvex Stealth S3960HS and Pyramex Capstone Shield. The latter two have explicit manufacturer chemical-splash documentation. D3 indicates splash protection; D4 and D5 address dust and fine dust. None of these goggles establishes gas/vapor tightness.

For integrated eye and breathing protection against CS/CN, the documented option remains the properly fitted Avon PC50 + CTCF50 assembly. A face shield alone has open edges. Fit goggles, helmet and respirator together; do not break a face seal with straps or glasses.

SPECIALIST HEAT / SOURCED ANSWER

What high-heat gloves can actually establish

Professional thermal gloves are substantially different from thin work or examination gloves. HeatArmor 5065 and Dragon Fire X2S are now listed as specialist options; neither is a verified safe-canister-handling system.

Canister combustion temperature is not exterior shell temperature. In one 2002 study, three CS canisters reached internal maximum temperatures of 725, 779 and 890°C (mean 798°C). These measurements are not exterior shell temperatures. A reliable universal shell temperature or cooling time was not established in this review. Orion also identifies severe-burn hazards from flare flame and liquid ash.

Thermal glove claims and test limits
Claim or standardWhat it meansWhat it does not mean
EN407 contact heatLevels 1/2/3/4 use 100/250/350/500°C test surfaces, with a controlled threshold of at least 15 seconds to a 10°C rise across the specimen.A safe holding time. Flame, radiation, molten splash and chemical resistance are different tests.
ANSI/ISEA 105 heat Level 4HeatArmor 5065 lists 662°F / 350°C palm contact-heat resistance under this separate standard.EN407 Level 4. The two rating systems must not be interchanged.
Structural firefighter glovesDragon Fire states NFPA1971:2018 certification. Thermal/moisture layers serve a professional firefighting role.A chemical-munitions qualification. Moisture, pressure and stored heat can still cause burns.
BBQ-glove advertisingOne HeatShield glove is certified at 250°C; its higher 500°C claim is a separate internal test.Suitability for flames, molten material or hot wet objects—the maker excludes these uses.

Contact pressure, duration, glove condition, moisture and the exposed area all matter. No listed glove addresses every hazard from a deployed device. Leave deployed canisters alone and move away from exposure.

Additional technical comparison: Ansell ActivArmr 43-113

The manufacturer lists EN407 contact-heat Level 3 (350°C). A qualifying U.S. small-supplier price and availability were not verified, so it is a research alternative rather than a priced kit item.

OPTIONAL BODY PROTECTION

Useful for defined impacts. Not a universal shield.

Motorcycle garments and sport pads can offer documented impact or abrasion protection within their test scope. An armored shirt, elbow guards, pocket inserts and kneeling pads are different products with different coverage.

EN1621 addresses motorcycle impact protectors; EN17092 addresses motorcycle garments; EN14404 addresses kneeling-work protection. A higher number or a tactical appearance does not establish protection from bullets, blades or crowd-control projectiles. Chest/back armor is not included with every armored shirt.

Our recommendation is to keep body gear optional and fit it to the person’s role. Check pad retention, full movement, walking endurance and heat burden. Loose inserts, heavy vests and unverified “riot gear” can add cost without an established protection claim.

The respiratory decision

RESPIRATORY EQUIPMENT: QUOTE ONLY. These are research candidates, not a confirmed protective kit. Confirm the exact approved mask/filter assembly, contents, sizing, shelf life, civilian purchase eligibility, stock and complete cost with the supplier. Medical evaluation and fit testing are separate steps required by this guide before reliance.

Wide comparison table. Focus the region to scroll horizontally with the arrow keys.

Respiratory systems and evidence
SystemWhat the evidence supportsDecision for this draft
N95 / P100 particle filterParticles; gases and vapors require appropriate additional filtration.N95 appears in baseline kits for particulate/infection protection. Never label it a complete chemical-agent system.
3M 7500 + 60926A reputable reusable industrial respirator and multigas/P100 cartridge. The 60926 published hazard list does not explicitly establish a CS/CN approval.Comparison only. Half mask also needs separate eye protection. Mask alone listed at $46.88; filters extra.
3M 6000DIN + CP3NManufacturer documents specific responder assemblies; requires correct DIN components and nose cup.A possible lower-cost quote alternative. Do not attach a CP3N to an ordinary 6800 without verifying the approved assembly. Stock and complete price unresolved.
Avon PC50 + CTCF50Manufacturer documents non-CBRN CS/CN/P100 approval. Most clearly documented targeted candidate found. Retail kit contents, sizing, fit and sale eligibility need confirmation.
Avon C50 + specified filtersDifferent approval applies to each combination; CTCF50 gives riot-control protection, CBRNCF50 gives CBRN approval.Higher-cost alternative if broader protection is required. Buying a C50 alone does not establish filter protection.

No air-purifying respirator supplies oxygen. These options do not make an unknown, oxygen-deficient or immediately dangerous atmosphere safe. Leaving exposure remains the priority. Obtain medical clearance before reusable-respirator use, pass an appropriate fit test for your exact model and size, and perform the prescribed seal check each time. A strap tug is not a fit test. Read the full respiratory conditions.

What reviews can—and cannot—tell us

Manufacturer specifications and approval documentation establish a product’s stated performance scope. Independent reviews help assess comfort, handling and durability. Merchant stars mainly describe customer experience.

The Verge’s 2026 gas-mask article supplies useful field experience on Parcil, MIRA and 3M products. It is not a controlled certification test. Its non-NIOSH options do not displace a documented approved combination here. OutdoorGearLab tests climbing helmets, which is useful for fit and durability but cannot establish protection against crowd-control weapons.
